Chennai Super Kings meet Rajasthan Royals as both the sides aim to keep their chances for a playoff qualification alive in IPL 2020. Both, CSK and RR are tied at six points but CSK are ahead of RR on Net Run Rate. The pressure is further mounted on both the sides after Kings XI Punjab registered their second-successive victory in the tournament yesterday and climbed up to sixth position in the table. As both the sides meet in Abu Dhabi, let’s take a look at the key stats ahead of the game. Head-to-head tie: The Sharjah loss made little difference to the H2H rivalry, which still remains in favour of Chennai Super Kings who have won 14 of their 23 T20 meetings. The Sharjah win was Rajasthan’s second win against CSK since both their IPL return in 2018. At the venue: Across the two seasons that CSK have played in Abu Dhabi – 2020 and 2014 – they have lost as many as they have won in four appearances. Cricket: We will try a few combinations but won’t experiment too much against Zimbabwe: Misbah

Pakistan will look to try out few combinations but won’t experiment too much in the ODI home series against Zimbabwe as it is part of ICC’s one-day Superleague, the qualification process for the 2023 World Cup, said head coach and chief selector Misbah-ul-Haq. The home series against Zimbabwe will consist of three ODIs and three T20 Internationals beginning with the first one-dayer in Multan on October 30. It will be followed by the second and third ODI on November 1 and 3 respectively. “We are very excited to be playing our first ODI series after more than a year at home and we will try a combination of experienced and young players but we don’t intend to experiment too much,” Misbah said. The former Pakistan captain noted that the national team had not played any 50-over games for one year now and it was important to have a good series against Zimbabwe. Pakistan’s last ODI series was against Sri Lanka at home in October 2019 and it was also scheduled to play alone ODI against Bangladesh in April in Karachi but that match was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “We have to keep in…

BCCI chooses not to renew contracts of 11 National Cricket Academy coaches

The BCCI has decided not to renew the contracts of 11 National Cricket Academy (NCA) coaches, four of them former India players, in the wake of the Covid-19 crisis, because of which there has been no activity at the academy in Bengaluru for the past few months and no plans for a restart in the foreseeable future. These coaches – former players Subroto Banerjee, Shiv Sunder Das, Hrishikesh Kanitkar, Ramesh Powar, Mansur Ali Khan, and Sitanshu Kotak among them – were on one-year contracts for salaries ranging from INR 30 lakh to INR 50 lakh [$40,750 to $67,900 approx.]. They were informed by Rahul Dravid, the NCA boss, that they would not be needed after the deals end on September 30. The other members of the coaching staff to lose their jobs are Rajiv Dutta, Apurva Desai, Atul Gaikwad, Subhadeep Ghosh, and T Dilip. As such, no clear reason for the decision has been conveyed to them, ESPNcricinfo learnt after speaking to some of the coaches who will be without jobs after a week. “It came as a shock, because there was no warning, when Rahul called me and said he had some bad news…

Mahmudullah: We have a long way to go in T20 cricket

Bangladesh captain Mahmudullah lamented that his team is not learning from its mistakes and still “have a long way to go” in T20 cricket. Bangladesh has come close to a victory on many occasions but has failed to cross the line, especially against top teams like India losing the T20 series 1-2. “We have a long way to go in T20 cricket. We don’t have big hitters. We have to be dependent on our skill hitting. So we are working on our game sense and become more consistent mentally,” said Mahmudullah following the 30-run loss to India in the series decider. “As a batting unit, if we can improve then we will have more chances to win,” he added. Needing 50 runs off the last 30 balls with six wickets in hand, Bangladesh was on course for a memorable series win here on Sunday but lost wickets in a heap to blow it all away. “I am not sure whether it was a composer or not. But if you see, we did similar kinds of mistakes probably in few games in recent times. That’s where I think big teams are quite good and very consistent…

Graeme Smith in the running to become South Africa’s first director of cricket

Former South Africa captain Graeme Smith is in the running to become the country’s first director of cricket, a post for which he has been interviewed by the Cricket South Africa board, according to a report on ESPNcricinfo. The interviews were conducted by a five-member board panel, which included the CSA chief executive officer Thabang Moroe. The new position, which was created following the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019, will see Smith competing with Corrie van Zyl, who was originally appointed to the position, albeit in an interim capacity, before being suspended, and former national selector Hussein Manack. Along with the world of experience of having played the sport at the international level, Smith also brings some corporate experience, having served in the corporate social responsibility team of the financial services firm Momentum, who are also the sponsors of the domestic one-day competition. Van Zyl and Manack present strong candidacy credentials themselves. While the former has been Cricket South Africa general manager since 2009 and was even their head coach during the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2011, Hussein was a national selector from 2012 until the conclusion of this year’s edition of the…

Vics left fuming as Redbacks refuse to manufacture target

Disgruntled Victoria captain Peter Handscomb lamented South Australia’s refusal to set up a final-day run chase in their Marsh Sheffield Shield clash, as the match he labeled “boring” and “pointless” descended into farce on Saturday. The reigning Shield champions elected not to use their frontline bowlers for the majority of the third day’s last session as Tom Cooper (188 not out) and Tom Andrews (75 not out) filled their boots on a lifeless Junction Oval surface that has seen just 11 wickets fall for a combined 1,143 runs across 287 overs. Cooper was caught in the middle of negotiations while he batted during a “weird” evening session as the two sides failed to come to an agreement on a fourth-day target for the Redbacks to chase. Where James Pattinson should have been proving his Test credentials with repeated spells in a competitive fixture, the fast bowler instead bowled two overs of off-spin as shadows extended across the ground. Handscomb and Marcus Harris, neither of whom have taken a first-class wicket in their 102- and 86-game careers respectively, bowled 18 overs between them and stationed up to six fielders on the boundary as their lead gradually…

Bangladesh Premier League To Have Rules You Would Have Never Heard Before

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) after taking command of the country’s domestic premier Twenty20 league — Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) — in its own hand has announced that all seven teams must have an overseas fast bowler in their squad who is capable of bowling over 140 kph on a consistent basis. Not just this, the board has also asked the teams to include at least one leg-spinner in their side. On top of implementing these wacky rules, the board has also directed each team to ensure that the wrist-spinner bowls his full-quota of four overs in every single match. Explaining the rationale behind making these rules mandatory, BCB director Mahbubul Anam said it has been done to improve domestic players’ skills in the shortest format of the game by providing them with tough challenges. “BCB wants this BPL to be about improving Bangladesh’s cricketers in T20s, so we want to make sure that our batsmen and bowlers get enough opportunities (against quicks and legspinners), something that was not possible when it was a franchise-based BPL,” Anam was quoted as saying by espncricinfo. , so we want to make sure that our batsmen and bowlers get…

County cricket: Abbott haul sets up a title decider at Taunton – as it happened

Tanya’s county roundup Kyle Abbott produced one of the greatest performances in the history of county cricket to throw an enormous pancake over Somerset’s hopes of winning their first Championship title. At a blue‑skied Aegeas Bowl, he followed his nine for 40 in the first innings, with eight for 46 in the second – collecting 17 for 86, the best bowling figures for Hampshire and the best figures in first-class cricket since Jim Laker shyly gathered 19 for 90 in black and white in 1956. Somerset, left to chase 281, had launched merrily after reaching it 62 without loss. But a revitalized Abbott, now pitching the ball up, took the post-sandwiches ball and Murali Vijay swatted him to mid-on, From there, Somerset fell to 100 for seven. There was a brief respite as Abbott rested, but he returned to mop up two of the last three wickets to leave a shellshocked Somerset licking their wounds. “I reckon that is the best I can bowl,” he said. “Everything I wanted to do work. It just happened to be one of those days – it was incredible. It only takes one or two balls to think that…
