College football coach suspended after saying Hitler was undeniably ‘a great leader’

Grand Valley State University suspended a newly hired member of its football coaching staff after he made laudatory remarks about Adolf Hitler during an interview with the Michigan school’s student newspaper, saying, “The way he was able to lead was second-to-none.” During the Q&A-style interview, published Thursday by the Grand Valley Lanthorn, sports editor Kellen Voss asked Morris Berger a variety of questions intended to help fans learn more about the football team’s newest offensive coordinator. Toward the end of the interview — as a nod to Berger’s degree in history from Drury University — Voss asked him to name any three people in history he’d like to have dinner with, excluding football figures. “This is probably not going to get a good review, but I’m going to say Adolf Hitler,” Berger replied. “It was obviously very sad and he had bad motives, but the way he was able to lead was second-to-none. How he rallied a group and a following, I want to know how he did that. Bad intentions of course, but you can’t deny he wasn’t a great leader.” Berger, who was named the team’s offensive coordinator on Jan. 20, rounded out…

Firms urged to crack down on office football chat

Chartered Management Institute head Ann Francke said sports banter can exclude women and lead to laddish behaviour such as chat about sexual conquests. “A lot of women, in particular, feel left out,” she told the BBC’s Today programme. “They don’t follow those sports and they don’t like either being forced to talk about them or not being included.” “I have nothing against sports enthusiasts or cricket fans – that’s great,” she said. “But the issue is many people aren’t cricket fans,” she added, arguing bosses should crack down on sports banter. Ms Francke is concerned that discussing football and, for example, the merits of video assistant refereeing (VAR) can disproportionately exclude women and divide offices. “It’s a gateway to more laddish behaviour and – if it just goes unchecked – it’s a signal of a more laddish culture,” she said “It’s very easy for it to escalate from VAR talk and chat to slapping each other on the back and talking about their conquests at the weekend.” ‘Terrible idea’ Nevertheless, Ms Francke does not think sports chatter should be banned, just moderated. She said that good managers should be inclusive and ensure that everyone in…

Ohio State Jumps LSU For Top Spot In College Football Playoff Rankings

Each week, it seems, as the College Football Playoff picture clears, the process by which the teams are selected does not. In a surprising turn, LSU, ranked no. 1 since its week 11 win over Alabama and coming off a 36-point win against Arkansas, was jumped by Ohio State for the top spot in Tuesday night’s College Football Playoff rankings. This is the most drastic movement amongst the top four in the rankings since week 11 and the first time any team in the top four has moved since. While both Ohio State and LSU are 11-0 and have a legitimate case for holding the top spot, LSU’s claim to the top spot seemed to be cemented given its three top-ten wins so far this season. The selection committee, however, values more than just quality wins, it appears. According to committee chairman Rob Mullens, Ohio State’s defense has made it the most well-rounded team in college football. “That’s the key piece,” Mullens said. “They’re a balanced team. Strong on offense and defense. Obviously LSU has a very strong offense, but to date, their defense isn’t as strong as Ohio State’s.” This certainly is the case.…

Writer’s Blocks: Reasoning With Football Season

FRISCO, Texas – It’s a lot easier to write a long, meandering column when you’re not on a short week. Apologies for missing Week 10. The Cowboys played on Monday night, and by the time I had regained my wits, they were kicking off against Minnesota. My bad. I have my doubts anyone actually missed this, but I mainly do it for me anyway. So I’m just going to hop right into it. Here’s a handful of stuff that’s on my mind as I try – mainly in vain – to figure out how I feel about this very confusing team we’ve all been watching. The fun thing about writing a weekly column on Thursday is that all the obvious storylines from the previous week have been beaten to death already. If you clicked this link to read about the red zone play-calling against the Vikings or the punt return that wasn’t, I’m sorry to disappoint you. By Thursday morning, I just can’t bring myself to do it anymore. Teams lose games for countless different reasons, and every loss has a scapegoat. Sometimes it’s obvious and sometimes it’s not, sometimes it’s fair and sometimes it’s…

Opinion: Baylor football back on top four years after sexual assault scandal rocked campus

Exactly four years ago, the nation’s premier college football matchup took place under a cloud of uncertainty and defiance when Baylor’s unbeaten team hosted Oklahoma. For a lot of people around the country, the game was secondary. In August of that year, details began to emerge about the widespread sexual assault scandal that would later consume the university. At the same time, questions about whether coach Art Briles and his staff enabled a culture of violent behavior in the football program started to gain momentum, creating an uncomfortable dynamic with many fans who refused to believe he had done anything wrong. Not many outside the Baylor community shed a tear when the Bears lost that night, 44-34, ultimately fading into irrelevance by the end of the season. And from a football standpoint, that’s pretty much where the Bears have remained — until now. For people who are immersed in college football, Baylor’s return to the national spotlight Saturday — once again unbeaten, playing at home vs. Oklahoma — seems like a feel-good story. Some of that is related to Matt Rhule, the coach who cleaned up the toxic culture left by Briles and spent much…

Football transfer rumors: Moise Kean and Granit Xhaka to Milan

With no goals in 11 appearances and a late arrival for a team meeting having blotted his copybook, Moise Kean could be forgiven for thinking his move to Everton has started badly. And if he isn’t he better start thinking that way soon because Mino Raiola is his agent and he waits for no man. The man who once branded Pep Guardiola ‘a coward and a dog’ in a war of words over Paul Pogba are apparently exploring possible exit routes for the 19-year-old forward who only landed in the Premier League three months ago. Milan is at the head of the queue for the Italy international who was excelling for Juventus last season before a surprise move to Goodison Park. Talks have already taken place and are set to get serious if you believe the reports in Kean’s homeland. Hopefully, Raiola has got a few properties in his Milan portfolio because Granit Xhaka has been busy house-hunting in the city prior to his own planned move to the Serie A strugglers. The Swiss midfielder is so fed up with being stripped of the Arsenal captaincy and abused by the fans he is willing to…

Michigan football cursed by the football gods again after tempting fate vs. Penn State

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The margin for error was so thin and Michigan football spent Saturday night teetering along its edge, perversely taunting the football gods to curse it until they eventually did. For those wanting to distill the Wolverines’ latest result, a 28-21 loss to Penn State, to one play, they likely would pick their final offensive snap. With the Wolverines trailing by seven points and facing fourth-and-goal from the Nittany Lions’ 3-yard line, Shea Patterson dropped back to throw and delivered a pass to the middle of the end zone. The ball hit receiver Ronnie Bell squarely in his hands before it fell through his grasp and tumbled to the turf. The dropped pass encapsulated the essence of a game defined by pivotal moments with huge consequences that could have gone either way. How about the holding call on defensive back Lavert Hill that rejuvenated Penn State’s only scoring drive in the second half? Or the missed signal that caused Michigan to be in the wrong formation on that fourth-quarter touchdown strike from Sean Clifford to KJ Hamler? Or the decision by Jim Harbaugh to try a 58-yard field goal that fell well…

This football coach disarmed a student with a gun. Then he hugged him

(CNN)A high school football and track coach in Portland, Oregon, was celebrated as a hero earlier this year after he disarmed a student with a shotgun. The student walked into a classroom at Parkrose High School in May, intending to use the firearm to take his own life, the Multnomah County District Attorney’s office said in a statement last week. At the time, reports said the coach, Keanon Lowe, tackled the student. But according to emotional surveillance footage released by the district attorney’s office Friday, Lowe did nothing of the sort. Instead, he embraced the student. Footage shows the student, identified as Angel Granados-Diaz, walking down the hallway where the camera is filming. He moves out of view as he enters the classroom, right behind Lowe. Seconds later, people begin running through the hallways. Lowe is seen backing out of the classroom, with the shotgun in his right hand. With his other arm, the coach holds the student at arm’s length. Another staff member enters the hallway and takes the gun from Lowe. Then Lowe wraps the student in his arms. The coach rubs his back and holds him close. They’re later seen sitting on…
